Whilst others are rightly pointing out the unbelievable levels of vitriol being directed at young Israeli footballer Nir Biton, it is worth remembering that the selective amnesia of many associated with his current employers, from fans to chest-thumping journalists, is acute.
Firstly, let me say I have the utmost sympathy for the boy. He is not a political emissary acting on behalf of the IDF command here, but a 22 year old professional footballer, earning his trade in Europe like many other young men have done and will continue to do so. His unfortunate providence is that he finds himself employed by Celtic F.C. in Scotland.
His crime was to say that he will always support his country. There isn't a man, woman or child in the world who wouldn't say exactly the same thing in the event of their country being attacked constantly by rockets.
What was probably never ever mentioned to Nir Biton is the reputation of the support that follow his current employers. Whilst it is a fact that the Celtic support have for many years dressed up open support for sectarian murder gangs as part of their clubs "culture and heritage", and that they have managed to reinvent history to support this preposterous position, there has been quite a deliberate shift in terms of the political element of that supports love for an armed struggle.
You see, what many outside of Scotland will not appreciate is that there is a virulent undercurrent in Scotland, whose roots are steeped in the most violent, most sectarian and most blood-thirsty elements of Irish republicanism. They also support Celtic.
It has been dressed up in so many different guises over the years, but essentially this sizeable element are the elephant in the room in Scotland. Safe in the knowledge that not one person in the Scottish mainstream media or political circles will mention it, they have grown in numbers, influence and political activity.
This creates a vacuum ripe for the political agitators and "Brit-haters" to step into and steer the hatred in other more political directions safe in the knowledge that the hooped coprophagians will follow suit. Essentially these political "directions" aped the republican causes championed by the Provisionals in Ulster, whereby any armed struggle in the world was deemed a comrade in arms as though to legitimise the IRA's sectarian murder gangs legitimacy. We had ETA, the ANC, FARC, PLO, Hamas and any rag-tag band of Israel-haters. The appearance over recent years at Parkhead of Palestine flags being testament to this anti-Israeli sentiment.
Current player Beram Kayal seems to get a "pass" on this and a tweet attached from a James Dunn when replying to our old friend Andy "Scotzine" Muirhead seems to capture exactly why he is allowed to play for Israel but not be "attacked":
So it seems that one or two in the Celtic support are letting the mask slip and that it is because Kayal is not Jewish that he gets this "pass." Surely not?
What is also rather unsurprising but not any less disgusting is the fact that journalists have been specifically asked to comment on the anti-Semitic, sectarian and utterly ill–advised attacks on the Celtic player but have chosen not to, presumably in fear of losing their "rhepublican kudos" from the hooped coprophagians?
Mr Greenslade gave this one the proverbial rubber ear. Why so Roy?
Or this tweet, one of many to the usually big mouthed but not-so-brave Alex Thomson?
The usual "Three Wise Monkeys" routine when presented with a fairly simple question.
And here we have a wee flavour of the all-welcoming Celtic family/fans for Nir Biton.
A small but representative set of twitter messages all attacking Nir Biton. I have left some of the more disgusting and frankly sectarian ones off this piece but you can imagine what they are like.
So there we have it, an Israeli player is attacked for coming out in support of his country, and Celtic fans abuse their own player for doing so. As pointed out in another VB article recently, somehow IRA-supporting Anthony Stokes doesn't get the same treatment - how strange?
Finally, a copy tweet was sent to me which originated from a long-time Celtic man with the moniker "Mince" who apparently is embroiled in all things Celtic who comments on the latest Euro forage by the hooped coprophagians.
Rocket Launchers and Palestine flags - Welcome to Scotland Nir, a place where when it comes to Celtic and their "support" it certainly does not do what is says on the tin with respect to Israel and the Jewish people.
