As the year 2013 ended, a year which will shape the very future of the United Kingdom dawns upon us. Not since The Acts of Union, passed by the English and Scottish Parliaments in 1707, which led to the creation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain on the 1st of May of that year, has the future of the United Kingdom been thrown into so much doubt.
In recent years, there has been a marked increase in anti-British sentiment being expressed through the Scottish media, by Scottish politicians, and by a growing group of fundamentalist Scottish Republicans within the Scottish population. In bygone days people were allowed the freedom to express support for the Union without fear of being targeted for physical or verbal abuse. 2013 saw an end to that freedom of expression, as high profile people who came out in support of the Union, or indeed simply expressed a pride in being British were targeted by a republican element within Scotland for personal abuse and in some cases, they became victims of physical intimidation.

Scottish journalist and political commentator Andrew Marr angered Nationalists when he highlighted claims that the behaviour of many among the Nationalists in Scotland is toxic:

The number of racist attacks by Scots on English people in Scotland has risen steadily over the years to the point where many people are afraid to openly show their support for the United Kingdom for fear of becoming yet another victim of anti-British racism on the streets of Scotland. Simply flying a Union Flag or the cross of St George may result in physical violence, as proven on numerous occasions in recent times:

Our club is a symbol of the Union in Scotland, and we, as a support are proud to show our support for the Union and our Queen. It is disgraceful that those who would tear apart the Union attack both our club and its support for celebrating our armed forces and those who have fought for the freedom and democracy which they now abuse in their attacks on our Unionist beliefs. It is because of our pride in being a symbol of the Union that our club has been targeted by the Nationalists and republicans in Scotland.
Many of our supporters are being criminalised for singing songs which are no worse than other songs which are deemed to be acceptable by the Nationalist-led Scottish Assembly. Double standards reign within the Scottish parliament where it is ok for Protestants and Rangers supporters to be labelled with the derogatory term ‘Hun’ by Catholics and followers of other football clubs in Scotland, yet should a Protestant or Rangers supporter use the term ‘fenian’, they will be charged with sectarian hatred.
The Orange Order finds itself demonised by the Nationalists and Republicans; marches are re-routed or simply banned, and yet Republicans are free to hold illegal gatherings and display flags, banners and symbols depicting terrorist organisations and murderers.
The supporters of Celtic football club are allowed to display banners depicting IRA terrorists at their ground and yet the police are reluctant to take action, as are the Scottish footballing authorities. Celtic football club allow collections in support of the IRA under its many variances around their ground on match days. The Scottish National Party have banners displayed at football stadia across the country despite the games governing bodies being strongly opposed to political messages being displayed at football matches, and yet they still remain.
Rangers supporters are vilified for flying the Union Flag and singing songs which oppose terrorists like the IRA and if our supporters chose to display a banner such as Celtic supporters frequently do, we would be arrested and hounded by the media in this country.
You only need to look across the Irish Sea and see how the Protestant people of Ulster are being demonised and discriminated against by Sinn Fein/IRA ministers. The people at the Twaddell Avenue Civil Rights Camp remain resolute and steadfast as they peacefully protest for their right to walk home, despite severe provocation and intimidation from Republicans.
Years of appeasing murderers and terrorists like Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness and their ilk have led to the removal of the Union flag from public buildings, Orange walks being banned or re-routed, and Protestants and loyalists being forced from their homes. The PSNI display double standards as standard and the media are failing each and every one of us by failing to accurately report news stories involving criminal acts carried out by the IRA and republicans against members of the British population in Ulster.
This week the media reported that talks aimed at building bridges in Ulster had broken down. Is it any surprise that they did when it was clear the talks were all about the PUL community of Ulster making even more concessions to appease the Republicans who have done nothing but lie, prior to and since the Good Friday Agreement? When a man who was a member of the IRA, a man with the blood of British people on his hands, a man who not only knew about his brother being a paedophile, but did nothing about it except try to cover it up, is a representative of the Republicans, why would anyone have any faith in anything they ever say or do?
Sadly, the problems faced by our friends across the water will soon become our problems on the mainland. There is a large fundamentalist following among Nationalists/Republicans in Scotland and I honestly believe that blood will be spilled on the streets of Scotland as a result of government inaction in relation to the increase in the number of attacks on anyone who dares to express an opinion which differs from their own bigoted views. Even if, as expected, the people of Scotland vote to maintain the Union, this will not stop this group of fundamentalists who may resort to using the bullet and the bomb. The warning signs are there.
We are at the beginning of the most important year in our history since 1707. It will either signify the end of the beginning of their attacks on the PUL community of Scotland, something which may lead to an escalation of hostility against our people, it may signify the beginning of the end for our religion, our ways of life and our traditions, or it may just lead to a new beginning for the PUL people of Scotland.
That new beginning can only be achieved through delivering a resounding vote in favour of Maintaining The Union.
It is the duty of each and every member of the PUL population of Scotland to ensure they vote to maintain the Union in the referendum later this year. This year will be a defining moment for the PUL people of Scotland. If we can unite and stand together, we can reclaim our country.
If we fail…….?
…I don’t even want to think about it.
