Vanguard Bears would like to say a big thank you to all those involved in organising last night's meeting. In particular to Simon Leslie and Angela Lynch who gave up a lot of their own time arranging a venue, dealing with ticketing enquiries and liaising with the hotel to ensure everything ran as smoothly as possible.
Last night's meeting was an opportunity for fans to put their questions to the requisitioners and learn exactly why they are engaging in this campaign.
In what was a very busy hall Jim McColl opened the proceedings and came across as assured, focused and very professional in his comments and general demeanour. He appears to be taking a less scatter gun and indeed more realistic approach to this delicate situation. McColl admitted that the board will not be removed in one fell swoop and indeed praised the credentials of the new C.E.O. This was after admitting he was on a list of their potential candidates for the job. His message was that the fans and the requisitioners had to give them a chance to earn their trust. A point rather oddly dismissed by Malcolm Murray without any explanation, very much flying in the face of Jim McColl's more reasoned and articulate approach.
Then followed some probing questions from members of the audience which quite frankly failed to deliver the clear and concise answers many were expecting. Indeed more accusations were levelled at the Rangers board which if there is any substance to them raise genuine concerns that need to be addressed.
For example the claim was made that Charles Green was canvassing a shareholder to side with the board at the upcoming AGM. The same Charles Green we have been told has allegedly severed all ties with the club. Vanguard Bears would also like to know if this is true and on whose authority he is acting.
Another was the claim that Jack Irvine (or Mediahouse) are being paid £40,000 per month with an alleged bonus of £100,000 should the current board prevail after the AGM. Again this has to be investigated to see if this is correct and to find out who is financing this arrangement. Is it the Club, the Easdales or one of the main investor groups?
Vanguard Bears is of the opinion that the continued use of Mediahouse and Jack Irvine is creating major divisions and animosity among all sections of the support. A point the current board have to address sooner rather than later.
The other point that raised a few eyebrows was when the issue of the Rangers Supporter's Trust and fan involvement was discussed. The claim was made that the R.S.T. has in 10 years failed to make any real advances and should be disbanded, and that all present groups should be disbanded in favour of one democratic fans group. This appeared to be favourable to Paul Murray who intimated earlier there are far too many groups as it is. So are the requisitioners going to go for fan representation or fan ownership?
Overall we feel this was a very worthwhile exercise and something we hope can be repeated on a regular basis. The only minor disappointment was the heckling of fans that have a different opinion and the disgusting behaviour of one so called fan that offered a Vanguard Bears member to a "square go" in full view of the assembled media.
However these minor incidents shouldn't distract us from the point that overall the fans mingled well and showed respect for all groups and their points of view. Now just imagine if this was to escalate in to one fan group speaking for all the fans? We can but hope.
Our thanks once again go to all those involved and who took the time to engage with the fans.
